The Encarta Dictionary defines a verb as “a word used to show that an action is taking place or to indicate the existence of a state or condition, or the part of speech to which such a word belongs.” The words run, eat, and sing are all common examples of verbs. A linking verb is defined by the Encarta Dictionary as “a verb that links the subject of a sentence with an adjective or noun phrase complement relating to it.”
